He received numerous awards and honors and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and an honorary fellow of Sciences, honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy and Institute of Physics. He is the author of several acclaimed books on physics.
